LMS Reports

There are many different reports available in an LMS. Some give me information about the class as a whole, some give specific information about an individual student, and some help me look at specific questions on quizzes and tests so that I can see what answers students gave and how the class did overall.

When I look at the reports my LMS provides I can easily get an overview of course progress for the class as a whole by looking at the overall activity report. The same information is also available in a task completion bar.

For students that routinely didn’t access portions of the course I emailed and called home. This generally resulted in improved grades as the student then started regularly accessing the course. As soon as I saw improvement I emailed both the student and the parent to congratulate them on their improved performance in class.

When I looked at this data there were clearly some students who were not completing the work that was assigned. I contacted, by phone, the students A, F, G and H, to find out why they were falling behind. We discussed what had been completed and what still needed to be done. I found out that one student was sick and had not contacted me or the school to let us know what was happening. Our policy is to allow work to be made up with a doctors note which is what happened in that case. Two students just didn’t feel like working so I contacted them weekly to discuss what needed to be done. One student had decided to go back to a brick and mortar school and had neglected to withdraw from the class. I put him in touch with the registrar and he was withdrawn. Having access to progress in the class allowed me to quickly see what students needed individual contact and intervention.

I can also see what specific items a student has accessed and which have not been accessed. I do this by looking at the personal report. This report allows me to see what portions of the course have been accessed and which discussions the student has participated in.

There is an assignment report that shows what assignments have been submitted and what the grade is. The LMS I use will only grade as satisfactory, not submitted, not corrected, and not satisfactory submit again. There is a comment box that the student can see which allows me to give specific feedback on the assignment. That is also where I can put a specific grade for the assignment.

QuizData

I also can look at quiz analytics and see how often questions were answered, what the choices made were, as well as overall progress. I found these very useful since I used a large pool of questions for quizzes. That was not a very useful screenshot since every question is on a different page and I usually had upwards of 50 questions for a 12 question quiz.

This specific quiz was about environmental concerns relating to oceans. Most of the students received at least 10 out of 12 points since they had the option of taking the quiz multiple times within the open time period. When I looked at questions that were missed the most frequent one was about plastic distribution in the ocean. Because of that the following week the students read different articles about plastics in the ocean. They then shared those articles with each other. The missed question appeared on future tests as review and the students did much better when answering it. This was a way of remediation for the entire class since only four students answered correctly when the question was given initially.

I sent home emails at the end of each quarter to review strengths and weaknesses. Grades were posted weekly with specific comments about what was missing and what the students did well on.

There were usually at least four resources daily that could be used, a video, text, website, and interactive. Students did have the flexibility to use whichever resources they found most useful to complete there unit study guides. This allowed students to pick and choose among a large selection of resources to find those they liked best. Students quickly found out that they usually needed at least two resources to pass the weekly quizzes with a high grade.

Those students that scored lower were contacted and received additional materials and help so that they could be successful. I always had a more to explore section that allowed the students who wanted to find out more places to look. The units were usually posted at least a month ahead so that students who needed more flexibility in working on lessons had time to complete assignments before the due date, even when life intervened.

Students can also be assigned specific work based on test and quiz information. The LMS allows individual assignment of lessons. In this way students can be given remediation or enrichment based on how they are doing in a unit. This allows me to personalize the content the students are receiving so that the content is customized for the level the student is working on. This works very well for students that have IEP’s or 504 plans.
